(Image Source: Disney )   BY CANDICE AVILES     Disney’s newest movie, ‘Oz the Great and Powerful,’ had an impressive opening weekend, bringing in around $80 million in the U.S. “Great wizard from Kansas, a dark shadow has cast across this land. I’ve waited for you to set things right. Great people of Oz your wizard is here."  [Via Disney ] According to The New York Times , the $80 million opening is one of the biggest March debuts but it’s still going to need some help to catch up to the estimated $325 million it cost to make. But counting the foreign box office the film made closer to $150 million opening weekend. Disney is already planning to do a follow up movie, but IndieWire reports, “given the astronomical cost and the fact that [the director] has already announced he won’t return … they might hesitate before pulling that trigger.” The film opened in almost 4,000 North American theaters and led the box office for the weekend by a substantial amount. According to The Wrap , ‘Oz’ was followed by ‘Jack the Giant Slayer’ with $10 million and ‘Identity Thief’ with $6.3 million. The Hollywood Reporter reports this strong start is a victory for Disney after its movie, ‘John Carter,’ tanked. Disney’s distribution chief told the news outlet families coming out to see the movie helped significantly. Prior to the ‘Oz’ release, critics said it would be hard to top the original 1939 classic “The Wizard of Oz.” However, the film is actually a prequel to the original movie and and it’s gotten pretty average reviews from the critics. It scored a 61% with movie-critic website Rotten Tomatoes who said, “It suffers from some tonal inconsistency and a deflated sense of wonder, but … still packs enough visual dazzle and clever wit to be entertaining in its own right.”
