But now the economic crisis in Greece is even hitting hard at the country's traditions -- like the ouzo industry. The alcoholic spirit, which famously turns milky when mixed with water, is under fire at the consumption AND the production end. The company Ouzo of Plomari has the largest share of what appears to be a shrinking market in the country...SOTeven with the drinks makers holding their line on costs, though, strapped customers are still cutting back their consumption SOTthe dire situation is hitting farmers, too, who grow the anise that's used to give ouzo its distinctive taste. For them, and all Greeks, really, it's inconceivable that an industry so close to the country's heart could die. Many involved say, however, that exports are the key for them now. They'll have to look abroad to help save this national spirit.(****END****)VIDEO PRODUCER/VOICER: Karen Sloan------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE: AP TELEVISION--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL: Samira Becirovic------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS: AP CLIENTS ONLY----------------------------------WIRE SOURCE: AP TELEVISION------------------------------------
