Outdoor Fire Pits and Fireplaces
According to the American Society of Landscape Architect, fire pits or outdoor fireplaces are the number one requested design feature today. And if you wonder that they had so much ambiance to a cool evening and well, let’s face it. Who doesn’t like to just sit and stare to the fire?
And one of the greatest things about outdoor fire pits and fireplaces is that you can have one for a lot less than you might think.
The simplest of them all is a little more than a metal bowl which may or may night come equipped with the grill tab just in case you want to do a little outdoor cooking and a protective screen cover. These things are great for small patios and courtyards.
Here’s another one that’s a perfect size for a patio. The top prevents rain from getting in to the fire pan and its open sides allow you to add wood easily and get a stick close to the fire for roasting marshmallows.
And during the summer, these babies make then be planters. Chimney’s arrived on the scene back in the 80’s and they remain as popular as ever. They don’t give up much heat, but the smell of burning wood in particular, the ever popular opinion adds to certain something to outdoor living.
And if you can’t get your hands on pinon which is basically just a type of pine, burn anything else you want. Oak, hickory, maple, pecan, even fruit woods like apple and cherry, they smell really great. But whatever you do, don’t burn pressure-treated wood in a chimney or fireplace or outdoor fire pit because it may contain harmful toxins.
Fancier fire pits will cost you more but do it yourself can easily handle the installations. This pit which happen to be as one as mine is nothing more than a ring made from mortared limestone. And all those you can’t see it, there’s a drain in the center that is connected to a pipe running underground and out into the lawn. So that runny water doesn’t collect in the pit.
I spend a lot of time out here with my family although at the moment Spencer and Dalton are away to college. Hannah is in school and Carrie is at the gym. I’m kind of lonely.
I do a little cooking out here as well. There’s just something about the flavor and part of the foods cooked over in open fire. Be it steaks, seafood’s, chicken stews, oh and the greatest camp fire dish of all, paia.
Here’s another of my fire pits and it too has a drain. I designed this one such as the fire actually sips below the level of the stone patio. And the side of fling shooting up from below is very cool. And during the summer, I stick a potted plant in it. But again, a fire pit can be very simple and inexpensive to install. This one from start to finish took two guys just a couple of hours to complete and the cost of materials were less than $100.00. Fire places are a different matter all together. They can get pretty pricy especially for custom models. But modular kits are available for about a third of the cost. There’s no getting around effect that they had a special touch to outdoor living, with or without a fire burning in them.
