(Image Source: Redapes.org ) BY CANDICE AVILES Orangutans at the Louisville Kentucky zoo are making good use of iPads. How so? By using musical and creative apps.  Here’s a look . The program behind this effort is called Apps for Apes .  It’s purpose is to bring awareness of orangutans’ endangerment as well as to prevent boredom and depression.  One Louisville Kentucky Zoo official tells WHAS it also gives the animals another way to express themselves. “It's a great way for us to get another peek into their minds and to understand another language we can communicate in with these animals.”  The apps range from musical instruments to paintings and zoo officials say they tend to favor the apps with the brightest colors and variety of sounds. The Louisville Zoo isn’t the only place supporting the Apps for Apes program.  There are around 15 other places worldwide doing it including the Milwaukee and Miami Zoo. Milwaukee County Zoo employees say the iPads have made large strides forward in communication between the orangutans and humans.   Stating , “they can finally show us they are thinking, feeling creatures.  Already, the great apes are able to choose their own lunches.” Miami Zoo employees point out the iPad helps orangutans overcome one main communication challenge they have. “ Orangutans are very intelligent, but lack voice boxes and vocal cords, which can make communication very difficult. Up until now, zookeepers have been using sign language to communicate with them.” Orangutan Outreach, the creators of Apps for Apes, hopes in addition to stimulating orangutans the program will help promote its conservation efforts.
