Hi, I am Betty and welcome to Betty’s Kitchen. Tonight we are making some Orange Glazed Beets. We are having some beef with potatoes for dinner and I think it is a really good complement to that would that would be beets. But just plain all beets by themselves, that is not quite as good as spicing them a little bit. So what we are going to do is add some flavoring and I think you can enjoy the orange glazed beets.
You start with a can of beets of your choice, these are sliced beets. You could have in wedges or other different preparations. But leave them to put in and just place in the sauce pan with the liquid. And then be very careful because this will stain very easily and people make a mess in the kitchen too. So I just put that in the sink to take care of it, this is going to the stove. Got to turn it on and I will heat those sliced beets in their all juice. While that is working, I am going to start my little orange sauce.
I have some butter, one tablespoon that I have already melted. Such as regular butter and then to that we are adding some flour. We need two tablespoons of flour, doesn’t that be surprising I happen to use that kind but we are going to put that in. Also we need two tablespoons of light brown sugar, so I have two tablespoons measured out. And we want to mix this together and that was firmly packed brown sugar that came out of those teaspoons. And I think I am going to go ahead and put the liquid in so this will mix up better.
The liquid, here is the orange juice. You can use any kind of orange juice you like. If you like the kind it has pulp in it that is fine. Or if it has calcium added any kind of orange juice that you normally would use 1/2 cup will be going in here. And these are the components that make up the nice sauce that we are going to be having. What we will do is stir this together and kind of mashed out any possible lumps that will come from in the flour.
You don’t want to start cooking it until you get it smoothed out. Because once you start heating flour in lumps then more than likely it will stay in lumps. So just smashed down on those and get a nice old blend here of going. And then take it to the stove and cook this slowly, stirring. Not necessarily constantly but with a good eye toward it, because you don’t want it to burn or get lumpy on you. And you can keep those lumps out by stirring, so let’s bring this over. Soon we have a few lumps it in and I will take care of those as we go.
That would be as heating and I am just going to turn this burner on to low. And then I will just be stirring this around. That gives me a chance to get those lumps smashed down and what we want to happen here is for this little sauce to thicken up and cook. And when that happens probably our beets will be ready as soon it begin to bubble are all dead. We will drain those beets and we will put the sauce on them.
The beets are done and they were done already but they are heated and they are drained also. And you can see how the little sauce turn down, it’s sort of thick and kind of pasty but that is what you want. And you want something that is not too liquid because there is going to be some liquid that is still stored from the original beets. I will probably have to see, where I drained them originally and I want this pot in order to do the mixing together. So let’s get rid of our colander and that is very messy and my advice is you need to clean that as soon as you get around to it. Don’t let it stick.
We are ready to put our sauce on top of the beets and that was a 15 ounce to one pound can of beets. Didn’t run a look closely at it but just a standard size can, not a huge one and that is what this recipe is intended for. And then stir this around and do it just kind of gently because you don’t want to tear the beets or change the shape of them. But try to get the coating all the way through so that the person would not get a serving of beets. Where a beet was not coated, so that is looking pretty good, so what we are going to do is pour this into our serving dish if you have a nice serving dish like this. Then I want to be vegetables to go along with your dinner can be orange glazed beets.
And it looks nice and pretty and they are very tasty and they have that additional sugary taste that comes from the brown sugar. And also a little tart taste coming from the orange juice and this is our nice dish of orange glazed beets.
