Image: ABC BY CHARESSE JAMES AND CANDICE AVILES Here’s one thing that probably not going to make Oprah’s Favorite Things this year - a lawsuit against her network from a former employee for sex and disability discrimination. In a suit filed Friday in Los Angeles, former OWN senior director Carolyn Hommel alleged the network phased her out of the company and refused to pay her vacation time because she was pregnant. [Video: Youtube ] While on doctor-ordered medical leave related to her pregnancy, Hommel was let go from OWN in March 2012 in a restructuring. She claims at the time she was encouraged to apply for a new VP position being added to her former department but she never got the job. Instead the position went to a contract employee brought in to cover for her during her pregnancy and who she feels took over her place at OWN. The official complaint ? Hommel was qualified for the vice president position, but Defendants hired a non-pregnant individual who did not suffer from medical conditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. The 19-page suit also states, “Hommel suffered and will continue to suffer damages in terms of wages, lost bonuses, lost benefits.... Hommel has also suffered and will continue to suffer anxiety, worry, embarrassment, humiliation, mental anguish and severe emotional distress.” This isn’t the first time Oprah’s been involved in a lawsuit from a disgruntled former employee.   Back in 2010, EOnline reported a disabled employee filed a wrongful termination and discrimination lawsuit against the network.  The employee claimed while she was on a leave of absence her position was filled by a non-disabled employee. Lawsuits date back to the 90’s, when Winfrey’s publicist filed a $200,000 lawsuit seeking severance pay and back salary. In other Oprah-related news, in addition to getting hit with a lawsuit, Oprah also injured herself while opening birthday presents earlier this week. She sprained a back muscle while attempting to move a flower arrangement sent to her by Tyler Perry.
