Host: How soon can I start obedience training with the newly adopted dog? Kevin Simpson: You can start obedience training from day one but I would keep it in the home and I would keep it light. Obedience training is a really nice channel for developing the relationship and also setting rules and boundaries within the home. Getting the dog something to be creative with and you know also challenging, but at the same time, you want to give the dog a chance to really absorb and acclimate to its surroundings. And so I would look at for the average dog holding off maybe about four to six weeks before you would take them to a new environment like a group class setting. But if you want to start to begin his training at home and you needed some assistance there are many great books and videos that can help you with that as well as hiring a private and home instructor to come to your house and work with you and your dog together.
