(Image source: NBC )     BY ZACH TOOMBS     For the first time in more than three years, the president will jump into the Sunday political talk show circuit.   NBC announced Friday evening that Barack Obama would join “Meet the Press” host David Gregory on Sunday to discuss impending tax hikes and spending cuts — and whether Congress can reach a deal to avoid them.   The president’s last visit to the Sunday shows came in September 2009, when he made the rounds to five networks in one day, right in the middle of the political battle over health care reform. The Huffington Post notes that he didn’t make any appearances on these shows during his re-election bid.   Another bit of news here — the fact that Gregory will be the one interviewing Mr. Obama. The host was originally scheduled to miss this Sunday’s show after running into some trouble with the law.   Politico confirmed this week that D.C. police are investigating Gregory for possessing an extended ammunition clip, which are illegal within the district.   Gregory brought the clip onto his show last week as a prop, while interviewing National Rifle Association vice president Wayne LaPierre. Whether any charges will come of that is yet to be seen.   Potential gun restrictions, including a proposed ban on assault weapons, could also come up on “Meet the Press.” Although Mr. Obama hasn’t been on since his first year in office, this will be his eleventh Sunday show appearance in all.
