SOUNDBITE: Jerry Bodlander/Associated Press"Despite lengthy negotiations between Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, which did yield agreement on all the outstanding tax issues, the nation is going to go over the fiscal cliff. A broad ranging agreement has not been struck, partly because no agreement can be reached about across the board spending cuts set to kick in. The House will vote on a variety of issues Monday night, but leaders said they would not deal with any fiscal cliff agreement, and that was the announcement that made it clear that the country would go over the fiscal cliff, albeit just a short period of time. With the markets closed on Tuesday, it gives congressional leaders time to try to strike a deal and win support for it before the markets open on Wednesday. Lawmakers especially in the House have been told not to go too far, especially since the new House is set to come in on Thursday.(****END****)
