And now President Obama is looking to make a move. Here’s Good Morning America . “President Obama is calling upon Vice President Joe Biden to lead a new multi-agency government task force that will examine gun control, mental health and education policies, all in hopes of preventing another such tragedy. ” According to NBC News, President Obama has promised gun control action since the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary. White House spokesman Jay Carney explains one of the options the president is considering. “He is actively supportive of for example Senator Feinstein’s stated intent to revive a piece of legislation that would reinstate the assault weapons ban.” In an opinion article for CNN, Rebecca Buckwalter-Poza explains no other politician is better suited for the job than Vice President Biden. Biden’s efforts eventually led to the Senate passing the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act in 1994 — a lengthy six-year process. The resulting legislation, also known as the the assault weapons ban, outlawed the manufacture of 19 types of semi-automatic firearms and criminalized the possession of high-capacity magazines. According to Buckwalter-Poza... “The process taught a critical lesson: When otherwise ‘pro-gun'; lawmakers have to choose between a crime bill including a gun ban and inaction, it is more than possible for them to vote to protect Americans.” According to The Hill , Republicans are also considering gun control. In a closed-door conference, Speaker John Boehner told House Republicans they needed to have a discussion on guns. A lawmaker who attended the meeting said... “Boehner said Republicans wouldn’t do “anything knee-jerk” in response to the killings, but said the party should be open to examining both mental health and gun policies in light of the tragedy.” And the NRA has finally broken its silence on the school shooting. According to the organization's website, NRA has waited to publicly comment on the murders in Newtown out of respect for the families. The organization says it is prepared to offer meaningful contributions to make sure this never happens again. The NRA plans to hold a news conference on Friday. (SOC)
