As the so-called "Three Amigos" summit wraps up in Mexico U.S. President Barack Obama had tough talk for the Venezuelan government and says that the U.S. and Russia are not reviving a "Cold War " chess game over Ukraine and Syria. In his closing remarks he sharply criticized the Venezuelan government for arresting protesters. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING: "In Venezuela rather than trying to distract from its own failings making up false accusations fro diplomat from the United States, the government ought to focus on the legitimate grievances of the Venezuelan people. " He said a proposed truce in Ukraine could offer an opportunity. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING: "We have obviously seen reports of a truce between the government and the opposition. If the truce is implemented it could provide space for the sides to resolve their differences peacefully." He also said that disagreements between the U.S. and Russia over Syria and Ukraine are no revival of the Cold war. (SOUNDBITE) (English) U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA, SAYING: "Our approach in the United States is not to see these as some Cold War chessboard in which we are in competition with Russia. Out goal is to make sure that the people of Ukraine are able to make decisions for themselves about their future . That the people of Syria are able to make decisions without having bombs going off and killing women and children,. or chemical weapons or towns being starved because a despot wannest to cling to power." The meeting of the three leaders, which largely focused on economics and trade comes some 20 years after the passage of the North American Free Trade Agreement.
