Image: Sports Illustrated By JASMINE BAILEY An update to the ongoing Manti Te’o story— Notre Dame has ended its investigation into the hoax and is on defense when it comes to their star linebacker. Notre Dame’s president, Rev. John Jenkins, spoke out— NBC has his comments. “A prank is all it was, nothing criminal— this matter was personal to Manti… Notre Dame’s investigation, now over.” According to the Associated Press — Rev. Jenkins said in a letter on Friday that university officials decided within hours of learning of the hoax that no crime had been committed and decided within a few days that no NCAA violation had been committed. But don’t expect this to end the Te’o hoax saga. News 12 “The young man believed to be behind the Manti Te’o fake girlfriend hoax is talking, to Dr. Phil. TMZ.com is reporting that Ronaiah Tuiasosopo gave an interview to the TV shrink in Thursday.” TMZ broke the story— reporting that the interview with doctor Phil will be "emotional and deep," and is expected to air sometime next week. But as more details of this story continue to unfold and the media continues to prod at Te’o— a writer for LAist ask the question aloud that a lot of people are probably thinking. “Why the hell do we care so much about this story?” Writing… "[If he did lie], why do we care that he lied? Notre Dame has a history of creating mythology to bolster its esteem … It's just publicity.” But a writer for the Los Angeles Times says he’s not surprised the story has taken off to such astronomical heights. Saying everyone loves a great “movie-like” storyline. “Te'o not only won, he went on to hawk the story of the tragedies he overcame to get that victory …The ‘movie’ made him someone special.
