A BBC correspondent says the test comes despite repeated warnings of consequences from the United Nations, the U.S. and South Korea. “It went ahead, anyway. And South Korea is now responding to that, too. A presidential adviser has said this is an unacceptable threat to peace and security … ” North Korea’s claim is that it tested a miniaturized device. While the U.S. isn’t convinced North Korea has perfected the weapon — a foreign affairs reporter for CNN says this level of test raises new concerns . “That means that North Korea is farther along in developing the technology to fit a nuclear warhead on a long-range missile that could feasibly reach the United States.” The U.S. Geological Survey detected seismic activity from the suspected location of the launch before it was confirmed by North Korea. One analyst on Sky News explained the correlation between seismic activity and the strength of the blast . Every two-hundredths on the Richter scale equals twice as much energy released — Tuesday was a 4.9, versus the 4.5 generated by a 2009 test. So certainly, this was a better bomb.” North Korea’s ally, China, has joined the list of nations condemning the test. According to the Associated Press, North Korea has responded by threatening, quote, “second and third measures of greater intensity” as an answer to what it calls hostility from the U.S. [Video: ITV ]
