It’s an NFL tradition like quarterback controversies, fourth-quarter meltdowns and the end zone dance. It’s Black Monday – the day after the regular season when coaches and general managers get their pink slips. At last count, seven coaches will be looking for new jobs. Where to start? Why not with the Bears cutting loose Lovie Smith? SportsCenter says it was a surprising move considering Smith’s beloved status in Chicago and a 10-6 season. But: “When you miss the playoffs five out of the last six years, these things tend to happen. Ownership has not been happy that they have been out of the postseason that often .” Also out is the Eagles’ Andy Reid. The Sporting News discusses what might be next for Reid, whose his 14 years in Philadelphia made him the longest-tenured head coach in the NFL: “It’s going to come down to fit. Does he fit the philosophy and direction of the new organization? Is he going to be the general manager-head coach like he was in Philadelphia. Or, is he just going to coach the team and can he accept that role?”   New England Sports Network is providing a live update of the coach firings that also include Romeo Crennel in Kansas City, Chan Gailey in Buffalo, Pat Shurmur in Cleveland, Norv Turner in San Diego and Ken Whisenhunt in Arizona But, let’s not forget about general managers. As Mike and Mike in the Morning discuss, quite a few have lost their jobs too. “So, if a GM loses his job and a coach doesn't, what kind of a situation is that? A new GM coming in with a coach already in place. Normally it's the GM picks the coach. So it could be some weird situations this year.” Weird situations? Sounds like it will be just another normal NFL season.
