WSAV and WXIX have the details. “Some nearby residents have evacuated after Nicaragua’s tallest volcano began spewing ash hundreds of feet into the sky. The 5,700 foot San Cristobal volcano began spewing ash on Christmas day.” “In 1998 a whole village was buried in a landslide. Earlier this year and in 2009, explosions in the crater caused gas and sand to rise three miles into the sky.” NBC News is reporting Nicaraguan authorities have recorded 15 eruptions from the volcano since Christmas. The volcano is less than 100 miles north of the country’s capital, Managua. But the International Business Times reports as many as 1,500 residents have refused to follow the evacuation orders. One local woman told reporters “People have not evacuated because we do not want to go and leave the area abandoned.” Nicaraguan officials say rescue teams have been dispatched to the area, but there is no timetable to lift the evacuation order.
