(Image Source: NFL.com ) BY CHRISTIAN BRYANT League officials might be going back to the drawing board on a questionable rule — one that contributed to the Detroit Lions’ 34-31 OT loss to the Texans on Thanksgiving. KCTV has the replay. “Houston running back Justin Forsett’s elbow and knee were down, but the refs didn’t see it. The play should’ve been called dead. Forsett didn’t hear a whistle so he kept running and scored.” Before the play was over, Lion’s coach Jim Schwartz threw a red challenge flag, which signifies a discrepancy with the referee’s call. Problem is, there was no call at the time and the play would’ve been reviewed anyway — current NFL ruling says touchdowns and penalties are automatically reviewed. ESPN has video of Schwartz’s reaction. “I had the flag out of my pocket before he even scored the touchdown. That’s all my fault.” A writer for NBC Sports breaks down what happens in that instance, saying: “...If a coach throws the red challenge flag under circumstances where a review would be initiated by the replay assistant, the team that throws the red flag incurs an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty — and the replay review won’t happen at all.” Sources say the rule was initially put in place to prevent teams from creating a delay of game. Justin Rogers from Mlive.com says Schwartz’s formality flaw still deserves a penalty, but isn’t sure whether the overall ruling should be allowed, saying: “ Failure to comply with the rule in these situations still merits a penalty, and potentially the loss of a timeout, but to negate the naturally triggered review is foolish.” Sources say NFL officials will meet to discuss the rule, which could be changed by the beginning of next season, if not this season. A writer for NFL.com says it would be wise for the league to overturn the rule. “Taking swift action here essentially is an admission that the rule, adopted in 2011, was ill-conceived and brutally flawed... Schwartz deserved the 15-yard penalty. The bogus touchdown and goat horns? Not so much.”
