A senior al-Qaeda operative has been arrested in the Cairo airport, security officials say.  The operative, identified as Saif al-Adel, allegedly took over the network’s leadership briefly after Osama bin Laden’s death.

But a source at the Cairo airport told Al Jazeera al-Adel claimed he had left al-Qaeda a long time ago. Al-Adel was on the FBI’s most-wanted list, with a reward up to $5 million for his capture.

A clean sweep for GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney — he won both the Michigan and Arizona primaries Tuesday. MSNBC reports Romney picked up 38 delegates …

“ … including all 29 from Arizona. The delegates in Michigan, however, are broken up by Congressional district — meaning Santorum will ultimately leave the state with roughly the same number as Mitt Romney.”

The U.N. is putting the death toll in the Syrian government’s violent crackdown at 7,500. The Human Rights Council held an emergency meeting after that announcement, but reps from Syria, Russia and Cuba refused to attend. Here’s euronews .

“The meeting was originally scheduled for March 12. Syria’s ambassador to the UN spoke at the beginning of the debate, expressing his discontent before leaving.”

A Coast Guard chopper crashed in Alabama, leaving at least one person dead, while three others are still missing. Here’s Fox News .

“The chopper crashed last night in Mobile Bay during a training mission. One person was pulled from the water but later died. At this hour dense fog is moving in, which could delay the rescue efforts.”
