(Image source: CDC.gov ) BY NICHOLE CARTMELL ANCHOR MIKAH SARGENT It’s being called the “winter vomiting disease.” Fox News says this strain of norovirus appears to be the cause of a contagious illness affecting many in the United States. “A new strain of the norovirus...has sickened people in Japan, Europe and now in America. The CDC says this strain is responsible for at least 60 percent of the stomach bug cases reported in the United States this year.” According to a CDC epidemiologist, norovirus, designated GII.4,  is much like the flu and is attacking the non-immune population. The Washington Post explains there are five main types of the virus, ranging in severity from G1 through GV. Most outbreaks are associated with the strand currently infecting much of the world. And it’s historically much more severe. The Washington Post says... “It is responsible for 21 million cases of illness a year in the United States, and about 800 deaths, mostly among the elderly. There’s no specific treatment for it and no vaccine...” And USA Today points out it’s still unknown whether this strain is more likely to infect people or make them more sick than previous strains. But the CDC says... “ … any time a new strain emerges, it has the potential to increase disease ‘because people haven't been exposed to it before, so they're more susceptible.’" The Examiner explains while the disease only lasts a few days, there is concern for some of the population. “...norovirus can cause serious complications due to dehydration from rapid fluid loss. Those especially at risk are young children and the elderly. Dehydration can cause blood pressure to drop, which can cause fainting and falls.” As with any flu outbreak, the CDC encourages people to take sanitary precautions, and especially wash their hands.
