The Grevy's baby zebra born at the Phoenix zoo is slated to receive a name. Do you like zebras?Well, the Phoenix Zoo is now home to a new Grevy's zebra. The male was born on January 19th and he is now on display, waltzing the grounds near the zoo's Africa Trail. The baby zebra does not have a name, however a ceremony will soon be held where the animal’s mother will pick from a three bags holding treats, each marked with a potential name. The chosen sack will contain the name that the zebra will bear. According to zoo officials, the young animal is constantly exploring his habitat and has befriended another male zebra that was born in November and shares the same dad. Grevy's zebras are considered an endangered species. Besides zoos, they can only be found in Kenya and south eastern Ethiopia. Habitat loss and limited water supply pose a threat along with hunting by poachers.Plain zebras are more closely related to the horse while Grevy's are similar to wild donkeys. The Phoenix Zoo works in connection with the Grevy's Zebra Trust, an organization devoted to the conservation of the breed.
