Image: The Times of India BY JASMINE BAILEY  ANCHOR NEVILLE MILLER  Five men accused of the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old New Delhi woman, have pleaded not guilty. The men have 13 charges filed against them, including kidnapping and conspiracy for the December 16 offense that sparked protest for reform all across India.   Al Jazeera:  “The victim was sexually assaulted and tortured in December— died of her injuries two weeks later. The Indian government has just passed legislation for harsher punishments of such crimes including the death penalty.” And the death penalty is what those five men could face if they are found guilty. A sixth suspect— 17 years old— will be tried separately as a juvenile. The maximum sentence he could receive, if found guilty, is three years in a detention facility. The New York Times has the names of the five adult men accused.   Ram Singh the bus driver His brother Mukesh Pawan Gupta , a fruit seller Vinay Sharma , a gym instructor Akshay Thakur , a bus cleaner. Singh says Sharma was never on the bus and Thakur was hiding beneath a seat and never took part in the crime. However, the Associated Press reports— the prosecution says it has strong evidence, including bloodstained clothing, DNA matches, mobile phone records, confessions and eyewitness statements.   The Daily Mail reports the victim’s father described her as the “hero of the family,” and said she was going to lift her family out of poverty after finishing her medical degree. “Without her we are lost...I want them to hang.” The trial process will begin on February 5 with the recording of evidence.
