Dr. Eric Bernstein: The biggest advance in skin care in my opinion has been in development of all these new lasers. And the single biggest laser procedure worldwide is laser hair removal. And then what I've seen recently is actually a professional strength lasers that are available now for use in the home.

For example, the TRIA Hair Removal Laser is about half the strength of the professional laser I use in my office, yet it's FDA approved for home use. And in fact, the people that invented the TRIA are the same people that invented the first professional laser I bought almost ten years ago.

Female Speaker: That's so cool. How does it work? Are these at-home treatments really effective?

Dr. Eric Bernstein: You know many of the at-home treatments we read about are not effective, but in fact, the TRIA Hair Removal Laser is extremely effective. And in fact, it's as effective as in office treatments.

Basically, what the lasers do is they target the pigment in the hair shaft. They heat the hair causing an inflammatory response which then makes the hair fallout and the follicle shrinks. You use the laser twice a month for the first three months and then once a month thereafter till there is no hair.

And the amazing part about it for me is that you really can get professional results at homes. So, for example, my wife who can come in my office whenever she wants, she is a doctor, she never comes. Doesn't get laser hair removal, but when I brought home the TRIA, it made her life and my life much better, because basically she doesn't have to shave in the morning. She is hair-free and it's because she had the ability and the convenience of doing hair removal at home.

Female Speaker: Well, it's so great. It must be economical too?

Dr. Eric Bernstein: Yeah, the TRIA Home Hair Removal is very economical. Professional laser treatments can cost as much for one treatment as buying the entire laser for home use. So they are economical.

Female Speaker: Great! What about anti-aging treatments? Any breakthroughs we are going to be seeing?

Dr. Eric Bernstein: With anti-aging treatments I think the biggest breakthroughs we're going to see are in the antioxidants. In my office, the two most effective treatments are Renova and Retin-A like products or the alpha-hydroxy acids, but I always use those in combination with an antioxidant. There are so many antioxidants out there; many of them are very powerful. It's impossible in my opinion for a consumer to really weigh through all the products that are out there and pick the right ones.

So I recommend you start with your dermatologist and get professional advice on what products to use for your skin type and then you can implement that advice at home.

Female Speaker: Right, it's great, great advice. What other technological advances we would be seeing in '09?

Dr. Eric Bernstein: Well, the big thing that I'm going to hear about, I guarantee at the upcoming meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology are body shaping devices, device to treat cellulite and fat, because there are number of strategies to address that. You have radiofrequency, you have lasers that target fats specifically, cold therapy and ultrasound, all can be used to treat cellulite and fat. And I think that's going to be the really big innovation that we're going to be hearing about in the very near future.
