(Image source: The Weather Channel ) BY JAMAL ANDRESS If you want information on the larger than life winter storm barrelling towards the East Coast, you may want to avoid searching for “Nemo.” “Well let me be clear about something: The Weather Channel is the one using Nemo when referring to this storm and some groups, including the National Weather Service, are against the idea saying it’s all about self promotion.” ( Video via WTSP ) The National Weather Service issued this statement on why they will not refer to the winter storm as Nemo or any other Disney character. "The National Weather Service does not name winter storms because a winter storm's impact can vary from one location to another, and storms can weaken and redevelop, making it difficult to define where one ends and another begins..." ( Via The Atlantic Wire ) But The Weather Channel has their justification as well... “‘The fact is, a storm with a name is easier to follow, which will mean fewer surprises and more preparation,’ the network added.” ( Via LiveScience ) So is Nemo catching on? Well it depends on who you ask. Here’s one local meteorologist in Florida who agrees with the Weather Service. “No it’s silly. It’s all for publicity and for marketing and it doesn’t have anything to do with meteorology. Most meteorologists think it’s a pretty poor practice.” ( Video via Bay News 9 ) Slate notes many major media outlets are also avoiding the name, but that hasn’t stopped the name from spreading. “You'll see no mention of the word ‘Nemo’ on the home pages or in the site-leading stories on the storm currently running in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Associated Press, or Reuters. … Of course, it's a different story on less staid news outlets, on Facebook, and on Twitter, where #nemo is currently trending nationally.” Speaking of Twitter, both New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie have used #Nemo to address their constituents. So all jokes aside, why does the mega-storm share a name with an adorable animated fish? According to CNN , that’s just a coincidence. ( Image via The Hollywood Gossip ) “... the name Nemo … is meant to harken back to Greek or Roman mythology, not the Pixar-Disney movie ‘Finding Nemo.’” I guess hundreds of years of Roman rule can’t beat a good Disney movie.
