KRISTAN CUNNINGHAM: Hey, there. I’m Kristan Cunningham, and here’s your GMC Trade Secret.
Nature is all around us, which means we have design options available in more places than just a store, and for a lot cheaper. You can take things that you find in your own yard or in the world around you and bring them into your home. So come with me, and I’m going to show you how to decorate naturally.
So here we are in a gorgeous room, and some of the most gorgeous items in it didn’t come from any showroom. Let’s start with this driftwood. These guys were found at a beach, but with about $4 worth of plumbing parts, this one became pure sculpture. Then we’ve got firewood on either side – pretty simple thing; it’s firewood. But these are kitchen base cabinets, very simple in construction, but stacked to become a really graphic element. And it’s about the quantity of firewood that we’ve used. That creates this beautiful texture and this really nice kind of backdrop to everything in front of it.
Then you go down to the firebox and we’ve got big hunks of coral. Now, this is an item that you often see in decorating, but it’s the last thing you’d expect to see in a firebox. You mix in some candles and the shadows are sexy and you have an altogether different effect, and again, something completely unexpected in an unexpected place.
The idea with decorating with nature is to look into your yard and take things inside and use them in a different way. Leaves can be in photo frames and branches can become centerpieces.
I’m Kristan Cunningham, and that’s your GMC Trade Secret.
