But NASA is hoping to soothe doomsday believers’ worries. Here’s WKRC . “NASA said our planet has been getting along just fine for more than four-billion years, and no credible scientist knows of a threat associated with 2012.” Many have linked the world-ending-on-December-21-theory to the end of the Mayan calendar. But WRTV says NASA scientist’s want the world to know this is just a fantasy. And they worry about impressionable kids who have sent emails and letters expressing their fear. “I’m disturbed by letters from kids who are afraid. I think that is the worst part of this hoax and it is a hoax.” According to Space.com , NASA has spent time debunking every doomsday myth from killer solar flares to near-earth objects threatening to slam into the planet. Large solar flares can have an impact, but one NASA scientist explains there are enough warning systems in place to make changes in advance. Furthermore, scientists explain there is no reason to believe our solar system will see solar storms more extreme than in the past, nor is there any evidence suggesting anything is even threatening to hit earth. The closest asteroid could come within 4,000 miles of Earth in early February. But WTHR explains scientists can agree on one thing... any threat to Earth has already been identified, quite a long time ago. "Scientists say quote ‘The greatest threat to earth in 2012, at the end of this year and in the future, is just from the human race itself.’" Some NASA scientists believe concerns about Earth should probably be more focused on climate change than some sort of cosmic catastrophe.
