He’s Egypt’s first freely elected president. Its first civilian to hold the office. And the first Islamist to win the election. Now, Mohamed Morsi enjoys his first official day as president after being sworn in.

“I will faithfully defend the Republican system and I will respect the constitution and the rule of law and I will look after the people’s interest fully.”

 

As Egypt takes on a new leadership, what happens next is questionable while the military holds power.

KSAT reports.

 

“Currently the presidency in Egypt is largely a figurehead position as the military holds much of the control over the country. It’s held the power since former president Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year.”

 

Although Morsi as the leader from the Muslim Brotherhood is a choice of the people. It is unclear how he will take the reigns of leadership says Al Jazeera .

 

“The fear is that Mohamed Morsi is just trying to appease the nation and then will end up accepting the limited powers that the military hand over to him.”

 

According to CNN , Morsi wants to reassure the educated public about his ability to lead the country.

 

“Don’t forget he only secured about 25 percent of the electorate. So a lot of people here are very nervous about his presidency and he is doing everything he can to try and reassure them that they don’t need to worry.”

 

While the election of Morsi symbolizes a step towards democracy, Daily Kos says the best way to tell is to keep an eye out for who the president will appoint.

 

“Let's see how many women are in the cabinet. ... If the Brotherhood is serious about coalition government they will appoint a second woman, in charge of a ministry that is gender neutral. How many Copts in the cabinet? These are the things that will be the first concrete signs of where things are going.”

 

Following the oath, Morsi spoke at Cairo University where he said all Egyptians would be equal before the law.
