New details on Microsoft’s Surface tablet are starting to, well — surface.  The company released details on the forthcoming device yesterday, setting the price on three different designs.

 

The prices will range from $499 for the 32 GB version without the black touch cover to (FLASH) $699 for the 64 GB version with the cover. The 32 GB version with the cover lands right in the middle at $599.  



But those won’t be the only options available. If you want to add a little pizzazz to your Surface you can pay an extra $120 over the $499 base price for a white, cyan, red, or magenta cover . The more traditional full keyboard Type cover comes in at an extra $130.



Initial reaction to the pricing of the Surface was mixed but according to VentureBeat it’s not the price that’s an issue — it’s the options.

 

“Surface pricing is not excessive for the models that Microsoft has revealed — except that the entry-level model does not provide a no-brainer heck-I’ll-give-it-a-shot opportunity. That’s the problem, if there is one — not the pricing for the models that Microsoft has chosen to make.”



If Microsoft is concerned about their pricing, or their options, or the rumored iPad Mini for that matter, they’re not showing it.  As the Wall Street Journal reports the company has already placed orders for 3 to 5 million of the tablets.



The Surface is currently available for pre-order on Microsoft’s website with the tablet set to hit brick and mortar stores on October 26th. Initial versions of the device will run a stripped down version of the Windows 8 OS called Windows RT.
