Image source: U.S. Patent and Trademark Office BY EVAN THOMAS Microsoft could be getting aboard the wearable computing train — a patent application surfaced this week for a set of augmented reality glasses, like the Glass project Google is already working on. And while patent app drawings aren’t always indicative of an actual product, but Microsoft’s ideas appear to differ from Google’s. The glasses look more like traditional wraparound sunglasses. And as Unwired View notes , the shades wouldn’t augment your everyday reality. Microsoft is pitching them as a real-time supplement for entertainment events — baseball games, concerts and the like. Or they could be for gaming — GeekWire looked over the patent paperwork, and noticed one of the listed inventors is on Microsoft’s Xbox team, too . “…this growing evidence suggests that the company has been been thinking seriously about augmented reality heads-up displays as it contemplates the future of the Xbox, specifically.” A writer for Business Insider takes a longer-term view — now that Microsoft’s on board, should we expect the next evolution in computing? “Computers have been getting smaller and closer to our faces since their very beginning. First they were in big rooms …. now they're in our palms. Next they'll be on our faces.” But it’s all guesswork for now. Gizmodo points out the patent was filed back in 2011. Who knows what’s changed by now? “So, if Microsoft is working on a pair of glasses, much progress has probably been made by Ballmer and co beyond what we see here. Or the project could be languishing in a dusty drawer somewhere...” Google’s Glass project is closer to reality — Sergey Brin and company showed off the latest prototypes and even offered them for sale at Google’s developer conference earlier this year.
