Quick sand, and luckily, quick thinking. A Michigan boy and his brother were digging in what they thought was clay -- but it was really a hill of sand, and it collapsed on 11-year-old Nicholas. WOOD has the 911 call from his 16-year-old brother, Kyle.

“My brother’s stuck under it right now.”
“Is anybody, an adult, back there helping him?”
“Yeah, my Mom and her boyfriend.”
But they couldn’t locate 11-year-old Nicholas Nelson.
“It all came down on him?”
“Yeah.”

Kyle, his mother and her boyfriend dug frantically while waiting for firefighters to arrive. In all, Nicholas was buried alive for 20 minutes. His mother says those minutes felt like hours.

“Beneath the sand, little Nicholas says he was saying goodbye in his head to his family members.”
“I passed out, but I was lucky -- there was a gap by me. It was scary.”

There was a small air pocket around Nicholas’ mouth, and that air saved his life. Firefighters dug with their hands and shovels, and first found Nicholas’ hand. They said the sand was a foot above his head. Nicholas and his family say he experienced a miracle.

Nicholas was taken to the hospital, and he’s doing fine now.
