And it looks awful. She looks like an old lady!” The reactions have been downright vicious despite the fact that the Duchess herself praised the artist’s work . “Kate saying the artist did a beautiful job of portraying her naturally. In fact, one critic even went as far as to say, ‘It transformed a pretty young woman into something unpleasant from the Twilight franchise.’” The main complaint seems to be that the portrait makes Kate look old. Artist Paul Emsley, who painted the portrait, tried to defend his work to the Daily Mirror . "The fact she is a beautiful woman is for an artist difficult. In the end I think what I tried to do really was to convey something about her warmth and her smile." But his style choices made some art critics scratch their heads. One compared the concept to a giant polaroid. A writer for Jezebel dissects the work, saying: “[I]it's confusing as to why Emsley went for photo realism solely under Kate's eyes, when the rest of it looks like it's in the blurry, soft-focus, flattering lighting of a Barbara Walters interview. … He changed her eye color! Clearly he wasn't married to the idea of historical accuracy.” The public will have plenty of time to get used to the portrait. It will go on display at London’s National Portrait Gallery.
