(Image source: Facebook) ANCHOR LAUREN ZIMA Mindy McCready’s sad suicide, which came not long after the death of her life partner, David Wilson, is turning the spotlight on a reality TV -- she is the fifth celebrity contestant from Dr. Drew’s rehab show on vh1 to die. It’s one angle of many in the coverage of her death -- that Dr. Drew’s “Celebrity Rehab” has a poor track record and is exploitative. McCready was the fifth cast member of the show to die -- the third from her season, along with Mike Starr and Joey Kovar. So, is this a blame game  -- or is televised rehab a bad idea? CNN spoke with Dr. Drew Pinsky, who has his own show on CNN’s sister network, HLN. He says one of the hopes with his vh1 show was to teach people how dangerous addiction was. DR. DREW: “If I was doing a show on cancer, there would not be much surprise when my cancer patient died. In fact, we’d celebrate a few years of good, quality life. People don’t understand that addiction has virtually the same prognosis.” But while that may be true for addiction -- does it make things worse to put an addict on camera? Entertainment Weekly says -- probably, because you’re turning addiction into entertainment. “… if some viewers couldn’t watch Dr. Drew’s show with straight face, you have to wonder whether the celebrities seeking treatment could take it seriously either.” And, in a seemingly contradictory move, Dr. Drew told CNN ’s Wolf Blitzer that he had recently advised McCready to seek treatment and keep it confidential -- he believes she feared the stigma associated with it. “A lot of my conversation with her was about how to keep it confidential, that she was entitled to confidential care. Lo and behold, the press got it, attacked her, she left and she’s dead because of it.” Dr. Drew also brought up a separate point -- that this is yet another sign that the United States needs to do a better job of addressing mental illness -- and a celebrity suicide by gunshot adds to the growing gun debate. The Dallas Morning News argues... “ ... guns make suicide attempts easier and more likely successful. … Gun owners are more likely to die by suicide but not because they’re more depressed but because they have a gun.” Of course ultimately, McCready is gone -- and ironically, news is now breaking that she recorded a song over the weekend... ...and had a friend play it over photos of Wilson.
