That’s the number of tweets sent out on Superbowl Sunday to tell the the ad executives at GoDaddy how much they hated the company’s latest commercial. All using the hashtag #notbuyingit thousands of tweets went out condemning the ad and calling it sexist. According to The Daily Mail "The hashtag generated more than 10,000 real-time tweets, and 7,500 of those went to the GoDaddy.com ad, which has been accused of ‘objectifying women and stereotyping programmers." Just in case you haven’t seen the ad here’s a peak... Enjoy “Slobber sounds of Go Daddy kiss” For two years in a row the popular hashtag #notbuyingit has been pushed by Miss Representation.org as a way to call out sexism in the media. Miss Representation is a documentary released in 2011. MissRepresentation.org says their film , “... challenges the media’s limited and often disparaging portrayals of women and girls, which make it difficult for women to achieve leadership positions and for the average woman to feel powerful herself.” Here are some of the tweets associated with the #notbuyingit hashtag: “ This may blow your mind, but women are people, not objects. Women aren't accessories for cars. # 2013SuperBowl # NotBuyingIt ” “Fingers crossed that nobody gets sexually harassed at the next commercial break. Sad. @ speedstick @ audi # notbuyingit # sb47 ” The negative feedback hasn’t fazed GoDaddy. The company’s Executive Chairman and Founder Bob Parsons said in a press release exactly how he feels about his companies ads being called “inappropriate” “Inappropriate? Hearing that word, I absolutely knew we were in for a record Super Bowl ad campaign. And by the way, I think both of our ads were the funniest in the game, by far.” I can’t say whether a close up of an unlikely couple making out is funny or not but what I can say is the ad definitely accomplished the overarching goal. Mashable writes “ Love 'em or hate 'em, you have to admit Go Daddy's Super Bowl ads are effective. The company on Tuesday reported that the Monday after the game was its biggest sales day in company history. The company added 10,000 customers in total. ” Forbes caught up with the brains behind GoDaddy’s 9 year string of racy Super Bowl ads. If you were thinking male chauvinist pig... not quite. She is actually a mother and has 7 siblings who just so happen to all be women. So Forbes asked the chief marketing officer what she thought of all the backlash. Here’s her response... “I can tell you the Super Bowl is a platform where you have the opportunity to make an impact. Whether you loved it or hated it, it’s a memorable spot, and that spot, by the way, helped us achieve our best sales day ever...”
