(Image Source: USA Today )  BY SCOTT MALONE ANCHOR LAUREN GORES In the wake of news about Manti Te’o’s apparently non-existent girlfriend, you might be wondering what’s taller: the stack of awards and trophies he won this year, or the number of weird and bizarre facts that have come out with the story. “A Notre Dame linebacker finds himself in the middle of a very strange story.” (Via WJW ) “It was a love story that captured the country. But was it all too good to be true?” (Via KWTV ) “The inspirational story about his girlfriend’s death is a hoax.” (Via News 12 New Jersey ) “Manti Te’o’s girlfriend never existed.” (Via WFTV ) In Deadspin ’s super-detailed article that broke the story-- they point out one of college football’s most heartwarming stories had quite a few bizarre flaws the media passed over. The biggest ones? - The social security administration has no record of the death of Lennay Kekua , or her birth. - There is no record of a severe car wreck involving her... - Stanford has never had someone enroll there under that name... - and the photos identified as her in online tributes and TV reports are from a 22-year-old woman who has never met him . But all the way to the BCS championship-- Te’o maintained his love for Lennay Kekua and his very-real grandmother. “I felt all my loved ones with me. I literally felt them with me. And after every play I made I said that’s for you.” (Via ESPN ) And even his school’s athletic director Jack Swarbrick let Te’o be the one to tell his story. “I’m gonna let Manti tell the story because he deserves that right, but I will tell you this was exclusively an online relationship.” (Via NBC Sports ) And CBS Sports adds that Te’o told Swarbrick in December “he received a phone call from a number [he associated with] Lennay Kekua.” When Te’o answered, it was “the same voice he had [previously] talked to, who told him that she was, in fact, not dead” But the weirdest part? HLN is reporting Te’o’s heartbreak hoax might really be coming back from the dead. “This dead girlfriend? Well, she tweeted last night. On an unverified Twitter account, sure. She said the myths about this story will be addressed today.” The actual tweet read: “It isn’t fair to drag Reagan and Troy into this.. a lot of truths and myths need to be addressed here, and they will be...” Reagan and Troy refer to Arizona Cardinals fullback Reagan Mauia and Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu , who told ESPN they met her while they were doing charity work in American Samoa in June 2011 . But did anyone stop to question Te’o’s never-before-seen girlfriend? NBC Sports reports his own teammates weren’t so sure about her. “From the start, teammates were skeptical about Te’o’s relationship with a girl they had never met. Yet with a leader like Te’o, a guy that was so very clearly cut from a different cloth, it was difficult to challenge [him] … Teammates were quick to shrug their shoulders at a boyfriend-girlfriend dynamic that was just as unusual as their once-in-a-generation teammate.” What’s more? Big Lead Sports quotes a Notre Dame student who says Te’o’s teammates knew something fishy was going on. “They recognized what was going on for what it was - a terrible publicity stunt used to fuel Manti Te’o’s Heisman campaign.” In a statement, Te’o says he was the victim of a humiliating hoax- and should have been more careful. Deadspin reports an old friend of Te’o’s created Lennay Kekua’s online persona.
