Seth Horvitz ordered a TV through a private seller on Amazon.com; imagine his shock when UPS delivered a box containing an assault rifle. Horvitz's information was listed on the outside of the box, however, the invoice inside the packaging showed not only a different seller, but also a different buyer – a Pennsylvania gun retailer. Concerned the assault weapon may be illegal, Horvitz contacted the Metropolitan Police Department who confiscated the weapon after determining it was indeed illegal to possess in Washington D.C. where he lives. Horvitz is going to receive a refund for the TV, however he was shaken by the incident stating, “Why doesn't a carrier mark assault rifles if they're being shipped? Everyone down the line should know if there's a weapon in a package. Hopefully spreading this story can make things safer in the future.”

While it is not illegal to purchase a gun online, the process is strictly regulated. According to Gunbroker.com, federal law “requires that all modern firearms be shipped to a holder of a valid Federal Firearms License only.”
