There’s a good reason why many states prohibit the sale of fireworks to consumers. An exploding package filled with chemicals and gunpowder in the hands of an inexperienced thrill seeker can lead to disaster. This past weekend, an Australian man was flown to the hospital after showing off with a firework. He placed the firework between his buttocks; resulting in burns to his back and genitalia. The 23-year-old was at a party in Darwin and police cited alcohol as a possible factor in the incident. Northern Territory Police official comments “What must have seemed to be a great idea at the time has backfired, resulting in the male receiving quite severe and painful burns.” Once the man is released from the hospital, he may have to pay hundreds of dollars in fine.

Earlier in July, another man suffered injuries after lighting off fireworks. The 45-year-old Michigan resident was rushed to local hospital after a mortar shell exploded. He thought the firework was defective and went to check on it when it fired between the man’s legs, causing severe injuries to the genital area.
