Making Futurist Films

Steven Spielberg made a movie called the AI and another called Minority Report where
they do twilight drop like what the future would be like. The problem is that those futures
never really bear out. For obvious reasons it’s hard to do so. There's a part at the end of
Minority Report for example where he picks up or he takes a phone call of the little
device and it was sincere.

And then 2001 that was futuristic, but we already have in 2009 those devices. We have
Bluetooth, control Bluetooth headsets and so it wasn’t seem in that back they almost post
and take place in 2015. But we already have that now in 2009 so again right from South
we mistakenly underestimate what would happen over a decade or two.

Probably the most astonishing revelation was the one regarding his father. The
relationship that he had with his father and that’s something that we kind of we’re able to
tease out of ray and we’re able to reveal it and it became father and son’s story and that’s
what the film really is of course it’s a father and son’s story.

Now the film also happened to be about all these ideas but they take place in the die Jesus
of this father and son story and that’s probably what’s most interesting. I think it what
adds to the human element to a story as well.

Well, it was a great question and what I don’t know exactly how to answer other than to
say I knew I wanted to have these ideas articulated clearly but in a very entertaining way.
We wanted to make a film not just for intelligence but just for mass audience. So how do
you that? How do you take these ideas and do that? Well one of the things to do is to
create a story that reveals a hero on a journeyed trying to achiever either his or her goal
and so we set the film up and that type of framework and so the way it does have a goal
on the film and among the goals are of course I think was to bring his thought just like
follow back of what we reveal.

We’re organizing principle for making a film like this. Again, it is to get these ideas out
but what we knew, what we would have to do is to shoot a lot of footage and an over
shoot as a mater of fact which is what we did. We tried about 200 hours for another hour
and half final filmed. So you end up really having enough footage to where you can craft
and take the film wherever you want to and that in the process and that’s really what we
did.

So as it got later in the game and we started to narrow what we were trying to do then of
course we could go out and shoot more specific things and that’s kind of work what we
did. We knew that for example at the end of the act two we need a crisis to take place and
so knowing that we were able to require footage that kind of would help us get or take
our hero on that journey right there.

Not at all, in fact we have left many of the Vegas names on the cutting room for as it
were just for time sakes. So these individual people like Colin Powell for example they
really were very generous with their time and they were happy to help us out and I think
happy to help be responsible for helping get grates ideas out so we’re very thankful to
them.

Oh dear, there were certainly several. I mean where it’s actually a funny guy believe it or
not. I mean his a very serious man but he's also remarkably aware of things that are
funny. One time he was given a very serious speech at a venue called Transvision in 2007
at the field Museum in Chicago in a question and answer session had been provided for
and people are long enough to ask questions.

It was then a chap stands up and he says something to be effective, “Ray Carlswell” and
is in front of a huge audience and William shutter and all kind of celebrity but they will
but Ray Carlswell, post human this and he just give flips to Ray Carlswell at the bird
right in front of everybody. I'm filming of course and Ray just so calmly and coolly does
says you know, I don’t think I put a transcend my humanity but I will trans them my
vitality. He just kept on going and that was pretty funny. I have to say and unfortunately
could didn’t make it into the film for various reasons but it was pretty funny.

Well the obvious ones you know we had to get financing. We needed to figure out the
kind of story we we're going to talk and which we talk about it kind of find but
organizing principle that would guide us through. Once we found the story I think things
flowed a lot easier. There were some tough nights for myself I know when I felt like I
didn’t know what the story would be so I was very happy when I finally came to turn
with that.

You know and also I think gaining and raise trust. I mean he is now revealed that he
always I would had his trust but I wanted to make sure that he knew that he could trust
me so that he could take me into his confidence and reveal things that he wasn’t revealing
to anybody else because I knew I needed that confidence if I was able to tease out some
of these ideas and somebody’s new ones ideas and some of his personal beliefs.
