An earthquake hit the New England area Tuesday around 7 pm local time.

 

The earthquake was originally registered at a magnitude of 4.6, but was later downgraded to a 4.0. News 13 explains the shock was felt in the states around its epicenter, roughly three miles west of Hollis Center, Maine.

 

“It was felt in nearby states New Hampshire and Massachusetts and as far south as Rhode Island and Connecticut.”

 

A WTIC meteorologist shows the scope of the quake via the U.S. Geological Survey’s Shakemap.

 

“They ask people who feel an earthquake to report it and rate the shaking on a scale of 1-10 and pretty much all of New England Felt this, right down to the immediate shoreline - that’s about 230 miles away.”

 

The LA Times spoke to a few people who felt the earthquake...

 

 

A woman from Southern Maine said...

"There was a kind of rumbling sound, the house was shaking. My first thought was the washing machine was overloaded and tilting."

 

And one Boston native said...

"I don't think on the East Coast it's something you really prepare for. It really catches you off guard."

 

According to Maryland’s ABC 2, there are not yet any reports of injury or damage.
