Hi, I am Pamela Ferrell with Cornrows & Co. Natural Hair Care. Today, I am going to show you how to twist natural hair. We have sectioned a hair and now I am going to put the model in position, so that we can flat twist this hair. Most important thing is finger placement and if you notice, my hands are resting on the scalp. When you start a twist, you are going to grab two very small pieces, that's what's going to keep your beginning point fine. If you notice, my hands always stay; one of them stays in contact with the scalp. The reason is this is a on-the-scalp technique and so the hand on the scalp guides it. This is done with two pieces. Now we are gently twisting and twist at the very end. That will lock that end together. If that hair was blunt, that would unravel. So that's why you don't want to cut the hair really blunt.
Now we are going to use our clips to do the parting. We used a comb to make the main sections but the clips. We will use throughout and again, just twisting two pieces. Again, look at my hand that's laying right on the scalp. One hand is always on the scalp and that's what's guiding the twist. There is no tension with this style, it's all in that hand being placed on the scalp that really guides and lays that twist down. It shouldn't pull, it shouldn't hurt.
So now that we have finished the back, we will have our model come up and then we will flat twist the sides. Again, we are going to use our clip, that's what we will use for sectioning the hair. You want to make nice clean partings. Now we are going to curve it just a little bit. So I will have her tilt her head. Again, you will start with two very fine pieces, one hand stays on the scalp because that's what guides the twist and the other one gathers the hair. Make sure you have a little rhythm when you do your twist. Our rhythm is going to be 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2, 1, 2. That also will help you to pace yourself, so that you can get through this hair style.
This hair style generally from start to finish, twisting take you about an hour and a half and it will last a week. As you notice, her hairline which is very soft and fine and that's typical, the hairline is usually the finest section of the hair. So we are going to grab two small pieces, we are going to wind them. If you notice, I am only using these two pinch of fingers, my thumb and the finger next to it. That's what's grabbing that hair and winding around and giving it to the other. If you notice my pinky and the finger next to that is really not doing any work, other than just guiding and those fingers stay on the scalp. So be mindful of that, that's very important because if you try to use all fingers to twist, the other fingers are just going to get in the way.
Now we have finished the flat twist and as you see, we have given our little curves, so that it has some direction and it also makes it soft. The flat twist keeps everything in place, so that you don't have to move hair around. Next what we are going to do is, we are going to learn how to do an individual twist. The difference between an individual twist and a flat twist is, an individual twist is loose, it doesn't lay along the scalp and so it's like braid where it just comes loose. It allows you to really move that hair around, style it, you can do a pin-up, you can make it really curly, you can pull some of the drop in the face. So you have got a lot of flexibility and that's why we are going to do the front with an individual twist.
