Unlike other major American sport’s league the National Football League determines it’s
seasonal champion at the end of the year with only game and a series play off in 1967 it
was the first game. It was the AFL-NFL championship game. The champion of each
league would compete against the other one and eventually in 1970 the two leagues
merged and it became the NFL’s championship game or the Super Bowl. The Green Bay
Packers one of the first two Super Bowls easily providing doubt whether or not the AFL
to compete with the teams from the NFL, however in the third year the AFL’s New York
Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts in what is considered one of the greatest sports upsets in
history. The winner of the Super Bowl is awarded the Vince Lombardi Trophy which is
named in honor of the legendary Green Bay Packer’s Coach. Each year a new trophy is
designed and made for the Super Bowl champion. It is made of 7 pounds of sterling silver
and it takes 72 man hours to create the trophy.
