Melanie Raposo: Now with having a midwife, there is this such personalized care that you do not get from a hospital or doctor. How is that and why is that important in the whole birthing process to that personal touch?
Carolynn Prior: Well, I think on a social level, women often do not have this support nearby of their sisters and mothers and other laboring women to know what it is all about and I think that people see midwives as somebody that can help give them that wisdom, help give them advice, help walk them through it and I think that is really attractive for women. I think it is also in that women have a lot of fear about it, and feels a lot of fear about birthing, and so if they can have somebody help walk them through that helps ease those fears, that that's an attractive feature of midwifery care. I think too people just want information and that the obstetrical model of having an obstetrician who only has a few minutes for you because his or her case order is really full, does not always meet the needs of a low-risk healthy women who may have questions of nutrition, about all sorts of aspects of pregnancy that is not going to be answered in just a question or two. So, I think women often enjoy just leisurely peace of a visit that is half an hour or 45 minutes long or longer to ask all of their questions and to be really get a sense of what is going on.
