Her label, Interscope Records has rejected it for being “too positive.” The British-born, Sri-Lankan singer told the Australian newspaper, Gold Coast, "I thought I'd finished it. I finished it and then I handed the record in, like a couple of months ago ...At the moment, I've been told it's too positive. So we're having a bit of an issue at the label.” The singer added that she’s still trying to figure out just exactly what that means. No word yet from her label, Interscope, but it’s true, M.I.A’s never been one to shy away from controversy. She received criticism for a not safe for work music video depicting a mass ginger genocide, for putting her middle finger on display while onstage at last year’s Super Bowl, and perhaps most notably -- for bashing Bieber, telling NME Magazine, “I find the new Justin Bieber video more violent and more of an assault to my eyes and senses than what I’ve made.” So, would it be such a bad thing for M.I.A. to clean up her image? A writer for L Magazine muses, “[I]f this all means what I hope it means — that she's taken an unexpected dive into the Will Smith-era nice guy rap — well, that is pretty strange and fascinating, and it would be ludicrous for any label to keep that from the world.” .. And says one writer at Hollywood.com, “Because musicians are never allowed to change, or grow, or develop. ‘Don't mature! Don't take chances! Make every song sound the same!’ says music fans... nowhere.”
