Scot Henson: (Senior Director, XBOX Design Studio) Hi I’m Scot Henson, I run the design team hardware and software and today I’m going to show you the Kinect hub and how Kinect transforms entertainment with gestures and voice. Now one of the things we’re really excited about is when you’re expressing tense and you say “Hey Kinect pay attention to me, we’re going to instantly look at you, recognize you and log you into the system” and here you can see there’s my profile there with my Avatar and all of my entertainment, games and friends instantly available to me at my fingertips and what’s really cool about this it’s super simple.
I’m moving my right hand around the screen here. I just reach out and just grab and I’m able to interact with my games and my entertainment with my friends. You’ll notice here you can actually see the difference between my right hand and my left hand as I’m moving as well, right so I can drop my left hand or my right hand down and move over with my left and let me show you a couple of other pretty interesting things that are happening with Kinect.
Now not only can I use gestures but I can also use my voice. Let me show you how that works. “Xbox” if you can see it just say it so here we’re teaching the user the different words that they can say and once you’ve learned them then you contain it together with the Xbox command. Xbox Zune market place and now we’re launching off and we’re heading off to Zune. So Zune is going to be redesigned and re-imagined for Kinect as well in the same way that you saw with the Kinect hub and once we get into Zune you’re going to see a very simple interface again that I can use with both my hands and my voice and I’ll show you how that works.
So here it’s coming up and once it happens you’ll see there’s movies, TV and music instantly available to me. One of the neat features that Zune has added is the ability to preview your content before you actually go select it. So here in this case, imagine I’m halfway through a movie with Alice in Wonderland. It’s showing me where I was in the movie. I simply hover my hand over the movie and it will select it and bring it up and now I have to watch it.
Now in my household I have two little girls, typically their pretty active right their getting up and they live in the room, when they do Xbox pause and then they go, they get a drink, they come back. Xbox play and it just responds to me naturally, easily and effortlessly, so pretty sweet. Xbox stop! And here I am back to the top of my entertainment categories. Now that’s a pretty neat way to use your voice interactive entertainment. Let me show you how to do that with gestures as well.
So one of my favorite shows on TV right now I like to watch a lot of this and if you were to come to my house what I would do is like say “Okay, I know this is kind of goofy what you’re seeing right now but let me show this pays of later in the show.” Now with Kinect we’re removing the barriers between you and your entertainment. You don’t have to think about you know skipping chapters or fast forward or rewind.
You just simply and effortlessly reach up and connect directly to your entertainment and here you can see I’m moving my hand back and forth and I’m getting an instant preview of the show of Glee. Now I know that, that dance that we’re looking at actually pays off later in the show where the football team uses it as their secret play to distract the defense and of course they win the game as a result.
So effortless, easy, simple, made for everyone in the household to use. Right so I’m going to go ahead and stop that now and not give away the total ending. Last thing I want to show you on Zune is the ability to use gestures in music. Later his fall when Zune music comes to Xbox 360 I’ll have 7 million songs instantly available to me and I can just like you saw with movies on TV reach out, skip songs, go to my favorite song and if I happen to have the video then it will play in the background as well while I’m interacting and listening to my music.
So on the best speakers in my house, now I have 7 million songs instantly available to me this fall with Zune market place and Kinect. Alright so that’s Zune, that’s gestures, that’s voice. Let me take you back up to the top and let me show you how entertainment will be transformed through our partnership with ESPN.
