(Image Source: Wikimedia Commons )   BY JAKE GODIN ANCHORED BY CHRISTIAN BRYANT   Opponents of the proposed Keystone XL pipeline are hoping to turn the idea into a “pipe dream” this Sunday at the National Mall. The rally will consist of over 160 organizations including the Sierra Club and 350.org. The purpose is to urge President Obama to deny once and for all TransCanada’s permit to build the Keystone XL pipeline, citing environmental concerns. The proposed pipeline expansion would run through Montana, South Dakota and Nebraska. President Obama put the expansion on hold last January amid pressure from Congress to make a final decision. A writer for Forbes describes the cause saying: “Climate change is the last gasp for pipeline opponents as the other environmental concerns have largely evaporated because of a rerouting of the pipeline around the supposedly environmentally sensitive Sand Hills region of Nebraska.” Climate change isn’t the only reason activists are rallying against the pipeline though. Sierra Club Executive Director Michael Brune said denying the permit gives Americans a chance to become more environmentally friendly. “We actually have an opportunity to move away from dirty fuels and invest in clean energy. This pipeline would guarantee that we’re locked in to the most carbon intensive fuel source on the planet for the next half century.” Brune, along with activist Robert Kennedy Jr. and actress Daryl Hannah, were arrested Wednesday for protesting the pipeline in front of the White House. The arrests marked the first time in the Sierra Club’s 120-year history the environment group was actively involved in an act of civil disobedience.
