Al Jazeera and Sky News explain what happened. “Guatemalan authorities want to expel the founder of antivirus software company McAfee after arresting him for illegally entering the country. John McAfee went to Guatemala to seek asylum.” “The arrest end’s McAfee’s bizarre week-long existence as a blogging fugitive...The 67-year-old had appealed for asylum, claiming that he is being persecuted in Belize because he has information about corruption there.” Authorities in Belize want to question McAfee in connection with the November murder of his neighbor Greg Faull. A writer for CNN has the case’s background story. “It all started on November 9th, when [McAfee] told police someone poisoned his four dogs. To put them out of their misery, he shot each in the head and buried them … The dogs’ barking and aggressive behavior was a frequent source of friction between [McAfee and Faull]. Two days after the dogs were poisoned, Faull was found fatally shot in the head.” So why choose to flee to Guatemala? His attorney says it was because they have no extradition treaty, but the country’s Interior Minister says “He entered the country illegally and we are going to seek his expulsion for this crime.”  (Via USA Today ) And McAfee says Belize authorities will kill him instead of question him in the case. He told Bloomberg he was being sought in a political vendetta after he didn’t donate enough money to the government. McAfee’s attorney expects him to be released by Guatemalan authorities within hours, but Guatemala will reportedly send him back to Belize on Thursday.
