(Image Source: USA Today ) BY CHRISTIAN BRYANT It looks like the Millenium Falcon will be making a U-turn back to the big screen. But this time, with a new director at the helm. Sources report J.J. Abrams will direct the new Star Wars, Episode VII. This will be the first Star Wars movie since Walt Disney Studios acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for $4 billion. Although there has been no official word from Walt Disney Studios on Abrams’ commitment, a writer for Slate thinks the director is a top-pick: “Not only has he demonstrated his sci-fi chops with Lost and Super 8 , he has demonstrated an ability to resuscitate fading franchises with the well-received Mission Impossible III and the critically acclaimed Star Trek reboot.” The Wrap reported that Lucasfilm Chief Kathleen Kennedy had been “courting Abrams, one of the most successful directors and producers in Hollywood -- and a man beloved by fanboys.” What’s interesting is that Abrams previously rejected the notion of taking on a Star Wars project, saying he had a few others in the works... …One of them being a sequel to his 2009 reboot of Star Trek . The movie, entitled Star Trek Into the Darkness , is slated for release in May. But let’s not get confused : Star Wars and Star Trek are two totally different intergalactic stories, both featuring heroes, villains, spaceships and rabid fan bases. A writer for National Post breaks down the dichotomy between the two franchises, saying, “ Star Trek and Star Wars are like matter and antimatter: They cannot truly exist without each other (for both are necessary to keep the geekosphere supplied with oxygen in the form of new material), yet both cannot occupy the same place at the same time...” The new Star Wars film is expected to be released in 2015.
