STORY: Istanbul, Madrid and Tokyo - the three cities bidding to host the 2020 Olympic Games and Paralympics - handed their Candidature Files in to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland, on Monday (January 7). The IOC will elect the host city on September 7 at their session in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Istanbul, Turkey's largest city, is bidding for the games for the fifth time in the last six rounds of voting. Istanbul's 2020 Olympic bid leader Hasan Arat said there are no more obstacles in its way after a decision to stage the 2020 European soccer championship across the continent lifted a huge stumbling block. Istanbul's bid had been dealt a significant blow last year when Turkey also bid to host Euro 2020 and the IOC said the country could not host both events in the same summer. With European soccer's governing body UEFA unveiling plans for a continent-wide Euro 2020 in December, Istanbul saw its Olympic chances restored. Speaking outside the IOC headquarters, Istanbul mayor Kadir Topbas said the city has the capacity to host the Games. We want a part of the world to be in Istanbul for one more time and we have the capacity to do that." The IOC Evaluation Commission will conduct four-day visits to the three bidding cites, starting in March.
