Hi, I'm Ian Walsh and welcome to OnlineLessonVideos.com. We’re going to learn a version of the Irish tune The King of the Fairies today. This is a set dance or can also be played as a horn pipe. Let's go ahead and get started.
This tune is in the key of E minor. So first of all, we’ll take a look at some of the notes that we’ll be playing on the fill, in this key. A basic E minor scale in the middle, on the middle two notes, the D and the E string, it starts on your first finger.
[Demonstration]
The E and it’s going to end with your fourth finger or the open E. so let’s just play those eighth notes.
[Demonstration]
So those are the main notes we’ll be using. Some of the outside notes or the low B on the G.
[Demonstration]
And let’s – we get up to the high E string, we’ll be playing an A.
[Demonstration]
Basically, a G position or an E minor position. So, let’s take a look at the first phrase of the tune. Let’s take a close up look at the scale real quick. Take your first finger and place it on the E, on the D string. You can see the spacing pretty well here. Take a look at the spacing to the next note, your F. And then the third note, your G will be right on top of the F. that’s enough for the D string. We can move on the A string, but let’s take a look at these three notes played.
[Demonstration]
Moving on to the A string.
[Demonstration]
First finger goes in the same place, your second finger place the half step above your first finger now, the C natural.
[Demonstration]
And we play a D.
[Demonstration]
And then the E.
[Demonstration]
Or the open E.
[Demonstration]
So, let's try all these notes together.
[Demonstration]
Start on the low E.
[Demonstration]
Let's go back down from the high E.
[Demonstration]
Finally, we’ll take a look at some of the notes surrounding this E scale. You can basically refer to that E scale for all your other notes that you need to find. So for instance, the C which comes after this B on the G string, you know it’s played natural because —
[Demonstration]
We play the natural right here. So let start on the B right here—this will be your lowest note in the tune, we’ll start there and we’ll play it with the E scale again.
[Demonstration]
Those are the two notes we’ll play on the G, then we’ll play on the open D and continue with the E scale. Let's try it, start on the low B.
[Demonstration]
Here we go.
[Demonstration]
Good. The more you familiarize yourself with this key of E minor and the scale, the easier you’ll find picking up tunes in this key can be. So let's zoom out and go on with the first part of the tune.
