Interview With Danko Jones: Band
Rebecca Brayton: This trio has been delivering hard hitting power rock for over 15 years hi I’m Rebecca Brayton and welcome to Watchmojo.com and today we’re speaking with Danko Jones:.
So we always like to start with the origin stories of the bands that we interview so why don’t you tell us how Danko Jones: originally got together?
Danko Jones: We’ve been a band for 14 plus years now. We started in Toronto. we played the States for a little bit, did a couple of Canadian tours a label out in Sweden, one that we put out a record. Nothing was really happening in Canada or America and we kind of plateaued for us. We took up the Rockford, we did a five week tour in 2001 and we never look back we’ve done 22 tours since then and here we are.
Rebecca Brayton: And I wanted to know what kind of music you grew up listening to?
Danko Jones: When I was a teenager I listen to a lot of metal and then from metal I got into punk rock, once I discovered the bad brains of pretty much all bets were off and it pretty much got into any kind of music that sounded good to my ears regardless of whether it was fashionable or cool or not. For me, I naturally gravitated back towards what I started liking when I was a kid which is just rock and metal and it’s pretty much what I listen to these days.
Rebecca Brayton: Tell as about the new album.
Danko Jones: The new album is called Below The Belt, I interpreted as combination of like the best elements of previous album, it’s like heaviness of We Sweat Blood, the speed of—Sleep is the Enemy melody of Never too Loud, kind of fused together. I think it’s got something the heaviest moments and some of the fastest moments we’ve ever put on tape. We’re very happy about it and very excited that every body’s really taking it which is great.
Rebecca Brayton: And what about the video Full of Regret, tell as little bit more about the premise of that and how working together.
Danko Jones: The premise of video is, it’s a movie trailer that we’re the stars of Lemmy from Motor Head is the evil villain and he’s trying to kill us. And he’s hired Elijah Wood, who’s from Lord of the Rings and Sin city and a whole ton of other movies that you probably have seen already and Selma Blair, she’s also trying to kill us. So these are the two Hitman trying to—they’re just chasing us around and Mike Watt who was in the Minute Man and Fire hose and he now plays with Iggy pop and the stooges, he’s the narrator kind of like the Sam Elliot character and Big Lebowski. He bookmarks the video and he did an awesome job. We’re very grateful to them just coming down helping as out. It made the video look like a million bucks but we spent like 25 bucks on it.
