Hello, this is LP from Tekno. Welcome to another very exciting unboxing and short review of the new Touch Pro2. There are probably a hundred of these unboxing videos online but I assure you this is the most exciting one. Why, because it’s shot in a high definition. Okay, let’s get to it.
Compare to the old Touch Pro packaging, this one looks a bit like a neg dispenser, the diamond theme of the old Touch Pro packaging was pretty cool in deed but this new one is pretty cool if you happen to like eggs. Well, who cares about packaging anyways? This is what we’re here for, the new Touch Pro2. I should say my old Touch Pro was stolen from my hotel room last week and I was pretty pissed off. So if you who stole the damn thing and watching you kind of ruin my day but I also do have to thank you because thanks to you I got this new Touch Pro2 from my insurance company, and enjoy the poor, I mean the music and stuff on the phone.
Okay, here it is. Let’s put this aside for a moment and check out the accessories. We have the USB sync cable, and pretty basic stuff, and the installation software CDs which include manuals and sync programs and such. We have the extra stylus which I think maybe of lesser use because of the bigger screen on the new device. The USB headphones which are exactly the same as on that old Touch Pro, they have a black diamond look through them, pretty decent head foams, I think not great but not too bad either.
We have the 1500 milliamp battery. It’s a bit larger than the battery that old Touch Pro had. They also included a spring protector which I highly recommend using. All right, then we have the small pouch for the device, not the greatest thing ever created but I think it would serve its purpose. This one has a magnetic flap on it which is not too bad actually. Inside it has a soft microfibrish fabric, the phone slides in nicely and the microfibrish clean the phone from dust and such. The pouch does not have a belt strap but that’s only for yuppies anyways.
Okay, so here it is, the Touch Pro2. The device has a very nice 3.6 inch 800 x 480 pixel wide screen and the device is somewhat bigger than its predecessor. But it doesn’t feel to big in your hand. It actually kind of looks like the iPhone from the front side but when you turn it to the side you can see that it’s pretty thick because of the keypad to which I will get into later. I have to say the new Touch Pro2 feels a lot more sturdier than the old Touch Pro. The old one had a bit of a jiggle to it when the slider was close. This one feels a lot more solid. That’s a very good thing.
On the bottom we have the USB sync port where you can hook up your headphones or your USB sync cable or your charger. On the side we have the volume up and down controls. On top, we have the power button. On the side we have the stylus which is not magnetic like the old one we used to have. It’s a kind of a shame that they took out that feature because I thought it was pretty cool. I mean who doesn’t like magnets?
The back of the device looks pretty interesting. It has a mute button for the speaker phone which is a pretty good idea. The mute button had replaced the LED flash which to be honest on the Touch Pro was less than great in the first place. I’m not too sad that it’s gone.
Let’s take off the back cover. Here we have a couple of mics and one is actually for noise cancellation so it’s for better speaker phone capabilities. I have to say the speaker on the old one was lousy. So here the slot for the SIM card, I’ll stick my card in there and here is the slot for the micro SD which I don’t have yet. I’ll be getting one today.
Let’s install the battery and switch on the device. While the device is setting up and loading for the first time let’s check out the QWERTY keyboard. The sliding mechanism feels also a lot sturdier compared to the slider on the old Touch Pro. Built quality is always a big factor for me at least. When the going gets rough you’re going to want a phone that is as tough as you, right? Well, anyways, I have to say the Touch Pro2 is a lot sturdier than the old one, a big plus, a big one.
As you can see the keys are now aligned or should I say misaligned in the same fashion like regular keyboards. I would assume this makes misprinting a bit more harder, bands are also nicely elevated. The old Touch Pro had a great keyboard even for my fat thumbs. This one feels even, I have to say better. So the device has a tilting screen so you can actually for example set it on your table while doing a video conference or watching a YouTube video for example. The tilting mechanism also feels solid. I had my doubts about it at first but clearly for no reason. I think HTC did a great job with this one. it feels great and it works great and it looks great.
I skipped through the boring set up for your viewing pleasure. The installation was pretty basic and easy to set up, nothing special, nothing amazing. Going into the touch screen mechanics a bit, as you can see the touch screen is nice and big. HTC has gotten rid of the D-pad also in the screen which has made room for the big screen. The D-pad stuffed in the Touch Pro was not great, I have to say. it was probably the weakest thing on the Touch Pro. It looked good but it didn’t worked too well. So I won’t be needing that anymore. So all you need for the navigation of this device is basically the big touch screen. One of the best improvements of the Touch Pro2 is the resisted touch screen that has been improved vastly. It’s a lot more responsive and sensitive. This projects into faster and less frustrating navigation. Not that the touch screen on the original Touch Pro was bad. It was actually pretty good but the touch screen on the new Touch Pro2 feels almost like a capacitive touch screen on the iPhone, very responsive, big plus for HTC on that. They did a great job on improving this.
As you can see, the new Touch Flo3D2 is also more fluent and responsive. I think it’s due to the touch screen improvements and I also assumed the optimization of the software itself. No more like which also kind of always piss me off about the original Touch Pro. I won’t go into great detail about the software itself, small improvements here and there. I will say that the Touch Flo3D2 looks great. You won’t be seeing a lot of windows mobile 6.1 which is a good thing.
The phone has also a 3.2 Megapixel camera, the quality is pretty decent. I’ll take a picture for you. Well, yeah, it’s okay. If you want great pictures maybe consider that Nokia N97 that had a better camera. But for me this is good enough. One of the most advertised things about the Touch Pro2 is the speaker phone capabilities. I’ll do a short test on the device speakers because one of the few things that was lacking I think on the Touch Pro was a decent speaker. I’ll put on a song that’s included on the phone and we’ll see or actually listen to how the speakers function.
That was pretty good actually, much improved. I could imagine myself making a conference call with this phone. Well actually, if I had a conference call to make, actually got this phone just to impress my friends. Well, in reality I use the hell out of the Touch Pro and no doubt we’ll be using the hell out of this device well and keeping it under lock in key when staying at hotels in the future.
Kudos, you see they have listened to user comments and suggestions or for example at the XTA forms and they have improved pretty much every aspect of the phone that needed be improved. It feels a lot more finish product in the first phone, setting aside the egg bag that came in. A solid piece of hardware combined with what I think is the best user interface Windows mobile device has to offer right now. So these were my impression to the phone and I have to say I’m pretty impressed by the HTC Touch Pro2. It actually exceeded my expectations. I would have never bought the HTC Touch Pro2 because I was so satisfied with the first one before it got stolen but faith has its way and I have the new phone now and I’ll be hanging on to it until the next one comes out.
I’ll be coming back with a very exciting full review. We will be doing something special with the full review. We’ll be putting the Touch Pro2 into the test in the wild literally. I mean it’s going to be wild. We don’t have a website yet but if you like the short unboxing review let me know. Until next time. This is Tekno with LP signing out.
