Male Speaker: Jessie what's your question.
Jessie: I have an ingrown toe nail and I have struggled with it my whole life. I want to know if there is anything I can do about it.
Dr. Andrew Ordon: I got the toe question I think today and you know as a hand surgeon, a plastic surgeon actually someone who is thinking how can you get ingrowns on your hands too, so I think I can answer this for you. So you have had it pretty much all of your life.
Jessie: Yeah It comes and goes like depending on how I cut it.
Dr. Andrew Ordon: It sounds like you need to go see an expert on this who needs to take care of this once if for all. Now, what you see is this redness next to the nail bed or the nail plate and that's called the paronychium and in this case it's inflamed and it's red. So what the doctor is going to do is going to lift up this nail for you like so, right and don't go to a doctor who doesn't numb you up first, because this will be painful, he will put a little clamp on it like so, he will make sure that that nail is up and what you want to do is you want to cut that access nail that is rubbing on your paranychium.
So do you see that? So what we have done is you leave the nail bed, you just remove that part of your nail that's constantly rubbing into the adjacent and there it goes and you have just touched your ingrown nail. The acute thing is taking good care of your feet to prevent this problem, don't crowd your shoes, if you are in a job where your toes are getting banged, you should protect your toes, in your case you had it long enough and I think you need to see specialist.
Female Speaker: And I think the footwear point you made is really important, as women we go through so much for fashion or beauty.
Male Speaker: Toe cleavage.
Female Speaker: Or just hide, I mean I am on the smaller side and I love my heels but I really keep in moderation because when your feet start to hurt that's your body telling you, you need to stop and change what you are doing.
Male Speaker: And giving back to what the - if you are starting to see puss come out that's its time to, what the Yuk! I got to get to the doc.
