Audra Lowe: The Academy Awards are almost here, and if you're still waiting for your inviting mail, it might mean, you have to give up on that thought. But it could be time to give you and your friends a first-class seat to the hottest ticket in town, right in your own living room.
Marley Majcher is here (aka The Party Goddess). She has got some great tips to create a fun and unforgettable Oscar moment. Good to have you back Marley.
Marley Majcher: Thank you. Thanks for having me.
Audra Lowe: So first thing is you got to make sure that you do something special with the guest.
Marley Majcher: Absolutely!
Audra Lowe: Right.
Marley Majcher: And to what we're saying is that encourage your guest to dress up, have them come not only just in glamorous attire, but as their favorite actor or actress in a movie. It's so fun, because you can give trophies away. So for the person who is best dressed and the most realistic or the most creative, you can do it everyone. You give them fun trophies to take home. So it's really fun.
Audra Lowe: That could get interesting too.
Marley Majcher: It can get very interesting too just to see like where people's heads are, because someone might surprise you.
Audra Lowe: You can even more creative. You go another step further and have like a light size cardboard cutout or something, right?
Marley Majcher: Absolutely! You can do the cardboard cutouts, which you can get online.
Audra Lowe: The real actor.
Marley Majcher: Absolutely, the real actor, you can decorate your whole house of all these different props. We've got all these fun little gold disco balls, we kind of run with it, the gold and red and black theme here.
Audra Lowe: I like these. Yeah.
Marley Majcher: So yes, you can do the gold disco balls and just make sure that you decorate your house and get it all in kind of working order, so that it all feels very festive, not just the guests and your table.
Audra Lowe: It's all about the props, the pieces that you have. I see you've got the bow over there, the colors that all plays in to it, right?
Marley Majcher: Exactly, and then you can just do a frame, and on the frame, you can put the different movies that are out for word. You can put can your bar menu if you want, and then we even move over here and we've got manikins and sets that you can trick out and put on your tables. So when the guests actually sit down, it just looks fun and you've got sun glasses and all kinds of cool stuff. So that it feels really special and different. You don't necessarily need a ton of fabulous flower arrangements, you can just do all kinds of different props that go along with movie themes or particular movie, if that's what you want.
Audra Lowe: Okay, speaking of props. Use the kids as a prop --
Marley Majcher: Yeah.
Audra Lowe: -- you list them, get them involved too.
Marley Majcher: Use the kids as a prop, which we love. So what we're saying is sometimes award season, you've got the kids running around, we can't help it.
Audra Lowe: Right.
Marley Majcher: So what we do is we get the kids and we have them be paparazzi.
Audra Lowe: I like that.
Marley Majcher: So you can have them to give them disposable cameras. What I do with my kids is having to have disposable cameras and the flash goes off and even when they run out a pictures, who cares, and because they can just keep clicking and flashing and they are thrilled and then later can upload them online.
Audra Lowe: Why get better and more pictures with them doing it, than with an adult? This is how little too much to drink.
Marley Majcher: Exactly, exactly!
Audra Lowe: Speaking of the drinks too, you really trick out the bar completely, not just you haven't drinks there.
Marley Majcher: No. I love to trick out the bar, because I think it's something that's fun. So what we did with it, we did little splits of champagne, get some fun glasses, I mean there are so many inexpensive ways to get glasses with like a small number of people; you don't have to just get them from the rental company like secret spotting like T.J. Maxx or Marshalls, and they've got all these great glasses that you can just put out, even if they're mix and match, that's totally fine. Then you put your little splits of champagne in a bucket, and then have the guest pull them out. You can have them at the bar. It's just really fun, and different. You can stack the glasses up kind of behind the bar, so that it looks like décor, but then you're using your props. So you're not spending a ton of money just on props that you're going to throwaway.
Audra Lowe: You're big on the décor too, because the table, it has to fit the theme perfectly, right?
Marley Majcher: It has to fit the theme because people just don't get it. Otherwise, they go to your house and like, oh, hi! Is this a dinner party or what? What are we doing here?
Audra Lowe: -- have Christmas or have Oscar party.
Marley Majcher: Yeah, exactly. So you really want to make sure that the theme hits home, so that people get it.
Audra Lowe: I think this definitely hit home.
Marley Majcher: I think yeah.
Audra Lowe: I like it. I like it.
Marley Majcher: I am not sure what else this would be besides and award party.
Audra Lowe: Exactly. Thank you so much Marley. Good to see you again.
